First, yes, I have been away for a while. In pure Bipolar Athlete style, I crash landed at my second Backyard Burn trail race and fractured.... wait for it.. yep, my hand. I broke my hand running. This was my favorite injury story until I heard my friend Paul tell the story of how he hurt his calf SPECTATING at a marathon. He wins.
But this brings me to my first new love to come from 2013 -- trail running. I participated in two EX2 Adventures Backyard Burn runs and they were amazing! Great routes, amazing support, friendly people... cannot recommend enough! And even though I got hurt, I would do it all again. Learned a lot, trail running is great for adding variety to training -- different scenery, hill training, balance (yep, I clearly have a lot to work on regarding that last one.)
And with new racing experiences comes new shoes!! Favorites this year? Even though I crash landed in them, I LOVE my Solomon Crossmax shoes! For the record, the crash landing was because 1.) I am still learning what grade descend I can take without doing a preventative sit down and 2.) it was about 22 degrees out and frozen. So don't blame the shoes. They are killer.
The second pair I bought while visiting my friends in Asheville, NC (shout out to Metro Wines -- everyone stop by when you are in town) at a great running store called Jus' Running. I am training for my first full marathon and wanted to get a shoe with a little more support than what I usually run in. They recommended the Brooks Ghost and it is wonderful! Did my longest run ever last week - 14 miles - and no pain.
How do vegan athletes get their protein? My two new favorite vegan protein products:

SQUAREBAR - organic, vegan, simple, DELICIOUS!!!
and PLANT FUSION!!

Trust me on both of these... yum and yummer!
Stuck on a trainer for a few hours in the off season? Honor Nelson Mandela and watch this movie - trust me, will keep you motivated during your ride.
And for those of us who are awesome at buying running tights and new Under Amour and believe Title Nine dresses are the definition of formal wear -- StitchFix! How the hell did I ever live without this? Get this -- for $20 they send me a box of five items they think I will like based on my preferences and I only pay for what I keep and send back the rest. The $20 goes towards my purchases and I 25% off if I buy all five. The first box, I kept two items, the second I didn't like too much and sent all but one item back but with the feedback I gave they sent me a PERFECT box the next time. I am telling you, well worth the money for those of us who really hate shopping -- for normal clothes that is.
And last but not least, my new favorite place to run -- the
Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. It's awesome. Great view, new trails, parking and no strollers or bikes with trailers! At least not yet! Maybe I should delete this one from my list.
Oh and I love my new
Prius C. But I don't want to be one of those people who brags about her car. But it's a compact. And a hybrid. So maybe it is okay.
Happy New Year! Promise to write more in the coming year. And resolutions don't work. Don't make them. Just do all those things right now that you always wanted to do. Planning is overrated.
